Red Devils at top of league

London, January 18:

Dimitar Berbatov’s last-minute winner for Manchester United put the Red Devils top of the Premier League after a 1-0 victory at Bolton on Saturday while Chelsea netted twice in the last three minutes to salvage a 2-1 win at home to Stoke.

Chelsea appeared to be headed for an embarrassing home defeat when Rory Delap shot Stoke ahead in the 60th minute. But Juliano Belletti equalised in the 88th and Frank Lampard scored an injury-time winner.

Aston Villa came from behind to win 2-1 at Sunderland and Arsenal won 3-1 at Hull to remain fifth. Emmanuel Adebayor, Samir Nasri and Nicklas Bendtner scored for the Gunners.

The results mean United lead with 47 points from 21 games, Liverpool are second with 46 from 21, Chelsea are third with 45 from 22 and Villa are fourth with 44 from 22. Arsenal have 41 from 22. In other games, Manchester City edged Wigan 1-0; Blackburn beat Newcastle 3-0; and West Bromwich Albion beat Middlesbrough 3-0.

MADRID: Barcelona crushed Deportivo La Coruna 5-0 to move 15 points clear of Real Madrid and 12 ahead of Sevilla at the top of the Spanish league. A mesmerising first half display saw Barcelona score three times with Lionel Messi, Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto’o all on the scoresheet. Henry and Eto’o both added their second in the latter half. The Catalan giants are now 17 matches unbeaten in the league. Also, Renato helped Sevilla defeat Numancia 1-0. — AFP
