Robredo advances into final
Barcelona, April 29:
Former champion Tommy Robredo beat unseeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday to set up an all-Spanish final at the Open Seat Godo. The 23-year-old will meet defending champion Rafael Nadal or Nicolas Almagro on Sunday. Robredo, who reached the semi-finals at the Monte Carlo Masters last week, said he had recovered from an abdominal injury to reach this final.
Nadal aimed to move into the final with a 46th straight win on clay. Guillermo Villas holds the Open era record on clay with 53 consecutive wins in 1977, while 11-time Grand Slam champion Bjorn Borg is second with 46 straight wins in 1979.
Wawrinka relied on speed and carefully angled shots against Robredo, but made too many unforced errors, allowing his opponent to close the match in straight sets.
