Roddick crashes out; Sharapova advances
Paris, May 30:
Maria Sharapova showed little sign of shoulder trouble on Wednesday and reached the second round of the French Open by beating Emilie Loit of France 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Venus Williams entered the third round, beating Ashley Harkleroad of the United States 6-1, 7-6 (8). Svetlana Kuznetsova, the 2004 US Open champion, seeded third, beat Ekaterina Bychkova of Russia 6-0, 6-3.
But Anastasia Myskina, the 2004 French Open champion, lost in the first round. Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States beat the Russian 6-1, 6-0.
Marat Safin, a two-time Grand Slam champion, lost in the second round. The 22nd-seeded Russian fell to Janko Tipsarevic 6-4, 6-4, 7-5. No 10 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic lost to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. No 6 Novak Djokovic, No 9 Tommy Robredo and No 12 David Ferrer advanced.
Also, No 7 Ana Ivanovic, No 9 Anna Chakvetadze, No 12 Daniela Hantuchova, No 13 Elena Dementieva, No 14 Patty Schnyder, No 15 Shahar Peer, No 17 Katarina Srebotnik, No 21 Ai Sugiyama, No 22 Alona Bondarenko, No 24 Anabel Medina Garrigues and No 25 Lucie Safarova won. India’s Sania Mirza enjoyed a French Open breakthrough when she won her first ever match here, beating Alberta Brianti of Italy 6-1, 6-1 to set-up a second round clash against Serbian seventh seed Ana Ivanovic. It was Mirza’s first win at the claycourt Grand Slam in three attempts.
On Tuesday, the French Open’s red clay gave Andy Roddick trouble again. The 2003 US Open champion exited in the first round for the fourth time in six years, falling to Igor Andreev of Russia 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.
James Blake, also fell to Ivo Karlovic 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 7-5. Federer and Rafael Nadal both advanced to the second round. Nadal, the two-time defending champion beat Juan Martin del Potro 7-5, 6-3, 6-2.
