Sania, Jie in final
Doha, December 12:
Fourth seed Sania Mirza of India will play second seed Jie Zheng of China in the women’s tennis final at the 15th Asian Games on Wednesday. In the semi-finals, Sania thrashed Asian No 1 Li Na of China 6-2, 6-2 while Jie defeated Japanese Aiko Nakamura 6-3, 6-2 at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.
Sania was expected to get a tough fight from the Chinese, but Li had no answers to the Indian’s powerful baseline play. Sania converted four of her 14 break points that came in her way while Li got only one chance and failed to score off it.
“As I had seen her (Li) play before, I knew that I had to attack her strong forehand. The wind also forced me change my play when we changed sides,” said a beaming Sania. Li had words of praise for her opponent. “She (Sania) played really well and there was nothing I could do about it,” she said.
