Shahi announced women’s national volleyball team skipper

Kathmandu, October 15

Nepal Volleyball Association today announced Aruna Shahi as the women’s national team skipper.

Shahi was picked up as the captain after regular skipper Binita Budhathoki and her deputy Manju Gurung could not make the cut in the preliminary squad. A 22-member team is on Wednesday leaving for Bangkok to prepare for the upcoming 13th South Asian Games and AVC Asian Central Zone Volleyball Championship.

According to NVA General Secretary Jitendra Bahadur Chand, they had already sent the players’ list for the Central Zone tournament to be held in Dhaka next month. “Aruna Shahi is the new captain of women’s team and most probably she will lead the side in the SA Games,” Chand said at the farewell programme of the team.

Shahi, who made national team debut in 2014 in the friendly match against Maldives, was the member of the 12th SA Games team in India in 2016. Shahi, who hails from Gandaki Province, has also featured in South Asian Invitational Championship and friendlies against India.

The Nepali team will stay at FIVB Development Centre in Bangkok for 26 days and also play practice matches against local sides. National Sports Council Member Secretary Ramesh Kumar Silwal and NVA President Manoranjan Raman Sharma bade farewell to the team.

Chief coach Jagdish Bhatta, assistant coaches Salina Shrestha and Bharat Yadav, and team manager Rita Koirala will accompany the players to Bangkok.
