Shearer landmark goal lifts Magpies

London, February 5:

Alan Shearer became Newcastle’s record scorer on Saturday when he scored in a 2-0 win over Portsmouth in the English Premier League.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to help Manchester United trim Chelsea’s lead to 12 points with a 4-2 victory over Fulham, while Thierry Henry’s 200th goal for Arsenal helped the injury-hit club beat Birmingham 2-0.

Former England captain Shearer added the second goal in the 64th minute after Charles N’Zogbia netted first for the Magpies. Shearer’s 201st club goal moved him clear of the old record set by Jackie Milburn.

In other games, Bolton and Wigan drew 1-1, Everton edged Manchester City 1-0, and Aston Villa won 4-0 at Middlesbrough. West Ham overcame Sunderland 2-0 and West Bromwich Albion beat Blackburn 2-0.

Spanish La Liga

MADRID: Ronaldo returned from injury to score a goal and Zinedine Zidane had two to lead Real Madrid’s 4-0 win over Espanyol on Saturday, moving it within 10 points of Spanish League leaders FC Barcelona. Jose Maria “Guti” Gutierrez added another.

David Villa scored from the halfway line to earn Valencia a 1-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna while Malaga beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1.

Valencia’s victory extended its unbeaten league run to 11 games and kept it in second place, nine points behind Barcelona. Barcelona leads the league with 52 points.

Guti scored Madrid’s first goal in the 14th minute while Zidane sidefooted the second goal from inside the area in the 43rd after left back Roberto Carlos cut the ball back from the goal line. Ronaldo extended the lead in the 45th heading in a floated cross from the right by Cicinho.

In the 51st minute, Zidane gently lifted the ball to enable him to volley home from outside the area for Madrid’s fourth.

David Villa’s dramatic goal came in the 22nd minute when he spotted Deportivo goalkeeper Jose Francisco Molina off his line, prompting him to launch a 50-yard attempt that bounced once just before it entered the net.
