South Siders thrash Two Star

Kathmandu, July 1:

Akash Chhantyal top-scored with 31 points as Everest South Siders thrashed Two Star Club 111-32 and entered the quarter-finals of the second Annual Father Watrin Men’s Basketball Championship, here at GAA Hall today. Kathmandu Don Bosco College made it the last eight as runners-up from Pool A. The 16-day tournament has been organised by Godavari Alumni Association (GAA) in association with The Himalayan Times. Playing for the Everest South Siders, the ‘A’ division side Brigade Boys Club’s player netted as many as 14 two-pointers. The South Siders dominated the field throughout the match, which saw them taking a 16-point lead in the first quarter. Two Star were busy in defence only in the last quarter as the South Siders scored 29 points, while Two Star failed to net a single basket. With 2.28 minutes remaining, Anup Karki netetd a two-pointer as the South Siders registered a three-figure mark. Chhantyal added eight points towards the end. In the Pool C match, St Xavier College Club (STXC) XI beat Xavier Academy 55-30 with Swarup Thapa netting 16 points. Also, Ideal Model School beat Peace Zone Youth Club 87-82 in Pool D match riding on Sunil Gurung’s 33 points which included six 3-pointers.

Annapurna thrash Sankata

KATHMANDU: Suman Shrestha netted four, Ujjwol Thapa scored a hat-trick and Sujan Maharjan struck twice as Annapurna Club thrashed Sankata Club 13-0 in the Martyrs’ Memorial ‘C’ Division League Football Tournament. In the other match, Krishna Shakya’s hat-trick helped Birgunj Youth Academy beat Satdobato Club 3-1. The two matches between Swayambhu Youth Club and Bansbari Club, and Navajyoti Club and Battisputali Club ended with a 1-1 draw.

Open Judo Championship

KATHAMNDU: The newly-elected Nepal Judo Association (NJA) is organising the Nation wide Open Judo Tournament on July 8-9 to mark the 59th birthday of King Gyanendra. In all, 160 athletes including 40 womens are taking part in the men’s eight and women’s seven weight categories, said the organisers at a press meet today. The NJA are also organising the fourth Referee, Judge and Coaches Seminar from July 3-9. The seminar, which will be participated in by 30 referees, judges and coaches, will be conducted by NJA executive committee member

Khadga Bahadur Dahal, and JICA volunteer Akira Kaneko, who coached the Nepali team from 1984-88.

Suwal leaves for Iceland

KATHAMNDU: Senior table tennis coach Surendra Suwal left for Pallau, Iceland to conduct a training for the participants of the South Pacific Games and also hold the training for the ITTF Level I instructors. NSC member secretary Kishor Bahadur Singh bid farewell to Suwal.
