Strauss ton helps England recover

Leeds, August 7:

Andrew Strauss hit a century to help England establish a 322-run lead over Pakistan at stumps on the fourth day of the third Test here at Headingley on Monday.

Strauss’ 116 knock and wicketkeeper Chris Read’s marshaling of the England tail guided the home side to 345 all out in its second innings, setting Pakistan 323 to win.

Only one team has ever scored more than 300 runs in the final innings to win a Test match at Headingley. And Australia’s 404-3 to beat England in 1948 was the Invincibles side featuring batting great Don Bradman.

Pakistan played one over of its second innings before stumps, ending 0-0, with both Salman Butt and Taufeeq Umar yet to score.

After starting the day at 3-0, England moved to 121 without loss at lunch. But by tea, it had lost Marcus Trescothick (58), Alastair Cook (21) and Kevin Pietersen (16). Strauss hit his 10th Test century to help steer England to 237-4.

The England captain was out with the last ball before the final break when he was caught behind off pace bowler Mohammad Sami (3-100).
