Yuvi presents award
BASEL: Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh presented the Carlsberg Man of the Match award to Swiss Hakan Yakin, who scored a brace in their 2-0 win over Portugal on Sunday. A Nepali fan, along with his friend, is also going to Basel to present the award of the quarter-final match on June 21. “Carlsberg is a proud partner of the event and is the main sponsor of the Carlsberg Man of the Match Award,” said Gorkha Brewery in a release. — HNS
Busy Balkan Street
VIENNA: The biggest and most versatile party street in Austria these days is without a doubt Ottakringerstrasse. Known as “Balkan street” due to its large immigrant population, it has been closed more than once to allow fans to roam freely. On Thursday, it was the site of a Croatian party, while Sunday night saw a massive Turkish celebration. — AFP
Hungry fans
SALZBURG: Unhappy fans in Salzburg are having to go to bed with empty stomachs given the limited amount of food found in town after the final whistle. “We’re hungry after the games but hardly any bars or restaurants in Salzburg serve food after midnight,” is apparently a common complaint from starving supporters. So-called fan embassies are now mediating between the two sides to fill stomachs on one hand and pockets on the other. — AFP
Sleep for good cause
STEGERSBACH: Any fan who has ever wanted to sleep in the bed of Austrian hero Ivica Vastic, captain Andreas Ivanschitz or even coach Josef Hickersberger, can now do so for a good cause. The Balance Resort in Stegersbach, which served as the Austrian team’s base, is auctioning off a stay in these three rooms on Austrian ebay. The proceeds will go to a children’s hospital. And the beds will have fresh sheets. — AFP
