To amateur golfer Subash Tamang remained at the top of the leaderboard despite playing one-over 69 in the second round of the Surya Nepal Western Open here at the Himalayan Golf Course today.
The 13th South Asian Games double gold medal winner, Tamang posted the 36-hole total of one-under 135 in the fifth event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2021-22. He was one stroke ahead of pro Jayram Shrestha, who carded second consecutive even-par 68 - the best score of the day.
Tamang shot a two-over 35 on the front nine after he suffered a double bogey on the third and a triple bogey on the ninth against birdies on the first, second and sixth holes. On the back nine, Tamang carded three birdies on the 10th, 13th and 17th holes but he faced bogeys on the 12th and 18th holes.
Shrestha began the day with a double bogey and bounced back with birdies on the second and fifth holes. But he dropped a shot on the ninth to take the turn at one-over 34. On the back nine, Shrestha dropped a shot on the 12th against birdies on the 11th and 15th holes.
Former winner Dhana Bahadur Thapa moved to third at four-over 140 after he played one-over 69, while Sanjay Lama (68) and Niraj Tamang (70) were tied for fourth at 141. Nepal No 1 pro Bhuwan Nagarkoti was seven strokes off the pace after he shot two-over 70 and shared the sixth position with amateur Ajit BK (73) at six-over 142. Dinesh Prajapati (73) was eighth at 144, while Rame Magar (75) and slipped down to ninth at 145. Bal Bhadra Rai (72) completed the top 10 at 146.
Cut was applied at 27-over 163 with 21 pros and six amateurs making it to the third and final round of the 54-hole tournament organised by Nepal PGA under the sponsorship of Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd. Out of the total cash purse of Rs 775,000, top three pros will receive Rs 135,000, Rs 88,000 and Rs 65,000 respectively. The tournament will conclude with Pro-Am event on Saturday.
