Faguram Tharu struck in the extra time as Farwest-XI Football Club defeated United Kurseung FC 2-1 and advanced to the quarter-finals of the seventh Rajarshi Janak Cup Football Tournament here at the Santosh Shrestha Memorial grounds today.

Tharu netted the winning goal in the sixth minute of the added time when he converted a free kick into sensational goal from 25 yards out after Gagan Deep Singh was brought down. The match was decided in extra time after both the teams were deadlocked at 1-1 in regulation period.

Earlier, United Kurseung took the lead in the 37th minute through Nayan Pradhan's goal when his cross from right flank entered the goal.

Their joy did not last long as Farwest levelled the scores three minutes later. Bharat Tamatta converted from tight angle. Bharat Tamatta converted the free kick from corner area into the goal.

Farwest missed several opportunities to score in regulation period. Dipesh Shrestha struck against the post and Bimal Oli failed to open in an open nets in rebound.

United Kurseung skipper Raj Rauth hit the post and Milan Rai muffed up an easy chance in the injury time.

Faguram Tharu of Farwest-XI FC was named the player of the match and he received Rs 10,000. Farwest will now face A division outfit Church Boys United for a place in the semi-finals. On Friday, Nava Janajagriti Youth Club of Simara will take on Nepal Police Club.

A total of 12 teams, including six top flight clubs, are taking part in the tournament organised jointly by Bagmati Municipality Sports Committee and Bagmati Youth Club. The winners of the tournament will receive one million rupees.
