Peace rally held

KATHMANDU:

National Sports Council today organised a peace rally to mark the 55th Democracy Day and the 55th birthday of Queen Komal. The rally was participated in by NSC member secretary Kishor Bahadur Singh and other NSC officials, coaches and players. The rally, which started from Dash-arath Stadium, ended in Tundikhel. — HNS

Thapa, Rai triumph

LALITPUR:

The duo of Mani Thapa and Shiva Rai downed Kesh Gauchan and Basanta Nembang 15-6, 8-15, 15-5 to bag men’s doubles title at the second Ramailo Badminton Tournament, organised by Nakhipot Badminton Circle today. Prakash Rai and Bibhu Shakya were named the best player and the most disciplined player respectively. NSC member secretary Kishor Bahadur Singh gave away prizes to the winners. — HNS

Ujjwol Memorial cricket

BIRGUNJ:

Gautam School defeated Mount Edmund School by nine wickets and Adarsha School beat Little Angles School by three wickets in the day’s matches of the Ujjwol Memorial Inter-school Cricket Tournament. Batting first, Mount Edmund scored 39 runs in 12 overs. In reply, Gautam School overcame the target in 6.5 overs losing one wicket. In the other match, Little Angles were packed off for 73 runs in 17.4 overs. In reply, Adarsha overcame the target in 19 overs losing seven wickets. — HNS

Ronaldo to be fined

MADRID:

Real Madrid star striker Ronaldo will be fined by the Spanish club for turning up late to training two days running after his high-profile engagement party in France. “Ronaldo arrived 40 minutes late for training on Tuesday, because of an airplane delay and then was 15 minutes late on Wednesday,” said Antonio Garcia Ferreras, Madrid media chief. He added, “Discipline is the same for everyone at the club.” — AFP

Soccer great Sivori dead

BUENOS AIRES:

Former soccer great Enrique Omar Sivori, who led Argentina’s River Plate and Italy’s Juventus to numerous championships, died at age 69. He was born in 1935 and went on to win many local championships with River Plate and later in the Italian league during the 1950s. He had suffered from pancreatic cancer. — AFP

Holmes uncertain

BIRMINGHAM:

Kelly Holmes has yet to make up her mind about competing in next month’s European Indoor Championships in Madrid. The double gold medallist at Athens Olympics, is set to run at an indoor meeting having won a 1500m indoor event in Glasgow last month. But the 34-year-old said she had no ideas about whether she would go for the world championships. — AFP

KCA replaced

NAIROBI:

The government has formed a new cricket body to replace the Kenya Cricket Association, disbanding the organisation after accusing its officials of mismanaging the sport. The East African government dubbed the replacement Cricket Kenya, which has been recognised by the ICC because it has the support of all clubs and players. The ICC Intercontinental Cup match has also been postponed. — AP
