Tiger ends training
FORT BRAGG: For years, Tiger Woods heard his Green Beret father talk about life in the military and felt the stir of curiosity. After spending four days at this sprawling Army post, the golf great now knows some of what Earl Woods experienced as a soldier 40 years ago. Woods trained with various Army units, fired weapons, awoke early for 6-kilometre runs and twice jumped from a plane. By Friday, he was back on familiar ground, hosting a junior golf clinic and providing one-on-one instruction for eight young golfers. — AP

Thorpe hails England win
LONDON: Graham Thorpe arrived back at Gatwick Airport on Saturday hailing England’s 3-0 Test series win in the West Indies as an “incredible achievement”. Surrey batsmen Thorpe was one of five players along with middle-order colleagues Nasser Hussain (Essex) and Mark Butcher (Surrey), Glamorgan fast bowler Simon Jones and Kent wicket-keeper Geraint Jones returning home after not being included in England’s one-day squad. “To go to the West Indies and win three Test matches back to back was an incredible achievement by the guys,” Thorpe said. — AFP
Rahman stops Cawley
DOVER: Hasim Rahman stopped Mario Cawley in the second round, dominating the fight before finally flooring his opponent for a final time. Referee Gary Rosato called the fight at 2:25 of the second round after Rahman delivered a left jab that sent Cawley to the floor near his own corner. Rahman (37-5-1) won a second straight fight for the first time since April 22, 2001, when he captured the heavyweight title with a shocking knockout of Lennox Lewis. — AP
Warne overshadowed
LONDON: Australian spin king Shane Warne captained Hampshire for the first time on Friday but he was overshadowed by veteran teammate Dimitri Mascarenhas as the new English county championship season got underway. Warne claimed two for 27 but 36-year-old Mascarenhas went one better as Durham were bowled out for 128 at the Rose Bowl. Hampshire were 195/5 in reply at stumps. “It’s an honour and a privilege to captain Hampshire. We have some talented players here — there is no excuse for not doing well,” he said. — AFP
