Rain plays spoilsport

KATHMANDU: Rain washed out Nepal vs the USA match of the ICC World Cricket League Division-V in Jersey on Wednesday. Already in the semi-finals, the two teams will now play on the reserve day on Thursday. Both Nepal and the USA have won all their four matches so far. The winner of Thursday’s match will decide the Group A leader. — HNS

Wilson Hoops 2008

KATHMANDU: Gyanodaya Bal Batika, Gyan Niketan and Sambotta advanced to the senior boys’ section quarter-finals at the eighth Wilson Hoops Basketball Tournament on Wednesday. Gyanodaya edged past Young Hearts 54-52 with Tika Pun netting 20 points for the winners. Gyan Niketan dispatched Shri Diwa 62-55 and Sambotta eased past Intensive 66-36. Likewise, Gyanodaya made it to the last eight in the junior boys’ section with a 46-24 win over Daffodil while Ullens overcame Gyanodaya 34-14 to enter the girls’ section quarter-finals. — HNS

Badimalika win

KATHMANDU: Badimalika Battalion defeated Saileshwori Battalion in the final to win the first APF Brigadier Running Trophy Volleyball Tournament in Kailali on Wednesday. Ugra Tara Battalion finished third in the internal tournament participated in by six APF teams. Additional Inspector General of APF Sanat Kumar Basnet gave away the prizes. — HNS

Gilardino transferred

FLORENCE: Former Italy striker Alberto Gilardino has transferred from AC Milan to Fiorentina. Gilardino scored 36 goals over three seasons at Milan. Gilardino started several games during Italy’s World Cup victory in 2006, but has since been dro-pped from the team and will not play in the Euro 2008 next month. — AP
