Lalitpur in final

POKHARA: Lalitpur Sub-metropolitan City advanced to the final of the third Inter-Municipality Football Tournament after a 5-3 win over Madhyapur Thimi here at the Pokhara Stadium today.

Lalitpur scored three goals while conceding one in the added 30 minutes of play after a 2-2 deadlock in the regular 90 minutes. Shishir Adhikari, Ranjit Shrestha and Raj Kumar KC scored a goal each for Lalitpur while Manoj Ranjit converted for Thimi in the added time. Earlier, Thimi made a great comeback from two goals down to extend the match to another 30 minutes. Raj Kumar Ghising and Anjan KC had scored for Lalitpur in the first half but Jiven Sinkeman and Bharat Khawas pulled back a goal each to level the scores. Kathmandu Metropolitan City will take on Biratnagar Sub-metropolitan City in the second semi-final on Thursday. — HNS

KATHMANDU: Nepali shuttlers Pashupati Paneru and Sumina Shrestha defeated Yoneno and Phonga Savitalis of the US in straight sets 18-21, 21-14, 12-21 to enter the second round of the Yonex US Open Grand Prix in Los Angeles on Tuesday. In the men’s singles, Pashupati lost to Rossi of the US 18-21, 21-14, 12-21 while Balram Thapa withdrew after sustaining knee injury. Sumina was also ousted from the first round by the American Kepra 17-21, 16-21. Nepal had to withdraw from the men’s doubles after Pashupati’s partner Balram sustained the injury, said the Nepal Badminton Association here on Wednesday. — HNS

KATHMANDU: Gyankunj School is organising the first Inter-school Volleyball Tournament here on September 4-8. In all, 4o schools will fight for the championships in boys’ and girls’ section, said the organisers. The organising school has announced that the best players of both the sections will be granted two-year scholarship (tuition-fee free) if they join their college. Likewise, Kathmandu Model College also said that it will provide one year scholarship (tuition-fee free) for best spiker and best lifter in girls’ section in their college. — HNS
