HOBART: Serena Williams lost 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to Austria’s Sybille Bammer in the quarter-finals of the Hobart International tennis tournament on Wednesday. Australia’s Alicia Molik was beaten 6-4, 6-1 by Sania Mirza of India. Anna Chakvetadze of Russia beat Zheng Jie of China 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 in another quarter-final, while Russia’s Vasilisa Bardina beat Catalina Castano (Colombia) 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. — AP

Gloria Connors dies

BELLEVILLE: Former tennis pro Gloria Connors, who coached her son Jimmy Connors to multiple Grand Slam championships, died at the age of 82. Gloria died on Monday at her Belleville home said Dale Kurrus, whose funeral home is handling the wake. Gloria competed in the 1942 and 1943 US Championships but is widely known for developing her son into a world-class player. — AP
