Jayakar tennis

LALITPUR: Achal Thapa, Bijay Timani, Suyesh Rajbhandari and Anish Joshi won their respective U-14 boys’ singles section matches on the opening day of the fifth Jayakar Memorial Open Junior Tennis Tournament today. Lopsang Gurung defeated Anuska Joshi in the U-12 girls’ singles match. The tournament features 11 junior categories — six in boys and five in girls’ section. President of All Nepal Lawn Tennis Associaton Manoj Rana inaugurated the tournament the tournament. — HNS

League postponed

KATHMANDU: All Nepal Football Associatio, the organisers, has postponed the Martyrs Memorial San Miguel ‘A’ Division League Football for two days. The two matches scheduled — Ranipokhari Corner Team vs Friends’ Club and Sankata vs Jawalakhel Youth Club — for Tuesday will now be played on Thursday, the organisers citing a technical reasons said today. — HNS

Woods receives award

HOUSTON: Tiger Woods was voted player of the year for a record eighth time by the Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA). Woods became the first player in history to win multiple majors in consecutive years, capturing the British Open and the US PGA Championship among his eight US PGA Tour victories. He finished the season with six consecutive US tour wins. He won 97 percent of the vote that included Masters champion Phil Mickelson and US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy. Woods will be honored on April 4 in Augusta.

Paul Harris called up

JOHANNESBURG: Uncapped left-arm finger spinner Paul Harris was called up to South Africa’s squad on Monday after the hosts’ 123-run defeat to India in the first of three Tests. Harris joins Paul Adams as the squad’s spinners after Nicky Boje retired from Test last week. Fast bowler Morne Morkel has been put on standby for Dale Steyn, who injured his thigh during India’s first innings and was unable to bowl for the rest of the match. The second Test begins in Durban from December 26. — AP
