NJA fetes players

KATHMANDU: Nepal Judo Association (NJA) felicitated the 10th South Asian Games medallists today. Judo won two silver and four bronze medals at the SA Games in Colombo. The NJA awarded the silver medallists Ranju Rai (52kg) and Debu Thapa (63kg) with Rs 10,000 while bronze medallists Radha Devi Rai (48kg), Indira Rai (57kg), Devendra Karmacharya (63kg) and Subrot Shrestha (52kg) got Rs 5,000 each. Ranju and Debu have been selected for the 15th Asian Games to be held in December in Doha. The NJA also announced the cash prizes of Rs 100,000, Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 for Gold, Silver and Bronze medal winners respectively in the Asian Games. — HNS

NAA file writ petition

KATHMANDU: Nepal Athletics Association (NAA) has on Tuesday filed writ petition in Supreme Court against National Sports Council member (NSC) secretary and vice-president Sita Ram Maskey among others. The NSC has recently suspended the NAA alleging for not being registered at the NSC. The NAA in a press meet came up with documents to prove their legitimacy. The NAA president Kishor Bahadur Singh appealed the concerned authorities not to drag Nepal-German Athletics Development Project into the athletics drug scandal. — HNS

Basketball tourney

KATHMANDU: Kathmandudes and Everest South Siders advanced to the final of the third Open Basketball Tournament. Kathmandudes beat Whitefield Club 53-29 in the semi-final with Santen O’Sullivan scoring the highest 25 points. Everest South Siders beat Don Bosco Club 71-46 in another semi-final. Rishi Robertson netted 15 points for the winners. — HNS

Villarreal signing

MADRID: Villarreal has agreed to sign Matias Fernandez from Chilean club Colo Colo.Villarreal said on Wednesday that the transfer of the 20-year-old Chile midfielder will soon be completed. Fernandez will join Villarreal on January 1, 2007, enabling him to continue to play for Colo Colo in Chile’s Clausura championship and the South American Cup. — AP
