Rato Bangala win

KATHMANDU: Hosts Rato Bangala defeated Kathmandu Valley College (KVC) 53-33 in the opening match of the Inter-College Boys’ Basketball Tournament on Sunday. Om Shrestha scored the highest 21 points for the winning team while Niraj Pandey netted 12 points for KVC. In the other match, Himalayan White House International College (HWHIC) beat Rhododendron International Boarding School (RIBS) 71-69 riding on Nima Norbu Sherpa’s 24 points. Rupak scored 21 points for RIBS. — HNS

Judo team departs

KATHMANDU: Member secretary of the National Sport Council Kishor Bahadur Singh bade farewell to Nepali Judo team who left for India to participate in the fourth India Cup International Judo Championship to be held in Udisa. The participants are Devendra Karmacharya (60kg), Subrata Shrestha (66kg), Arjun Barnawal (73kg), Pravin Kaji Shrestha (81kg), Raju Shrestha (90kg) in men’s section while Lila Adhikari (48kg), Ranju Rai (52kg), Indira Rai (57kg) and Debu Thapa (63kg) are the female participants. Judo Commitee of Udisa state is organising the tournament in coordination with Judo Federation of India. — HNS

Rono wins in Mumbai

MUMBAI: Daniel Rono of Kenya won the Mumbai International Marathon as thousands of Mumba residents ran alongside top athletes from Ethiopia and Britain. Rono clocked 2 hours, 12 minutes, 3 seconds to beat out countrymen Mandago Kipkonir Desse with 2:12:18 and Leleito Stanley in 2:12:47. Rono’s win earned him $30,000. Ethiopia’s Seboka Mulu won the women’s marathon with a time of 2:33:15, ahead of Russia’s Abitova Inga (2:35:55) and Aman Leila (2:36:17). Mulu picked up $20,000. Bollywood actors such as Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee were among many celebrities who ran to raise money for charities. — AP

Motta sidelined

MADRID: FC Barcelona midfielder Thiago Motta will be sidelined for six weeks after injuring his right knee in training on Saturday. The Brazilian will require surgery, the Catalan club’s medical services said. Motta missed most of last season with ruptured left knee ligaments. Barcelona, the Spanish league leader and defending champion, is also without another midfielder, Spanish international Xavi Hernandez, until the end of the season due to a right knee injury. — AP
