Schumi takes pole
BUDAPEST: Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher took his first pole position of the season with the top time in Saturday’s qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix. It was his 64th career pole position to put him within one of Ayrton Senna’s all-time mark. McLaren’s Juan Pablo Montoya was second and Toyota’s Jarno Trulli came third. — AP
Yokohama hold Barca
YOKOHAMA: Yuzo Kurihara scored late in the second half as J-League side Yokohama F Marinos played to a 1-1 draw with Spanish champion FC Barcelona in a friendly match. Kurihara found the net with a low blast to salvage a tie at Nissan Stadium. Barc-elona opened the scoring in the closing minutes of the first half on a goal from Xavier. Barcelona played to a 3-3 draw against Yokohama in June. — AP
Els out for season
SOUTHPORT: Ernie Els will miss the rest of the golf season following knee surgery. The third-ranked South African had surgery on his left knee after sustaining an injury while on a sailing holiday last week. It was believed he might not return until December, which mean he would miss the PGA and NEC Championships next month, as well as the Tour Cha-mpionship and European events. — AP
Man U beat Urawa
SAITAMA: Wayne Rooney netted a pair of goals as Manchester United defeated J-League side Urawa Reds 2-0 in the last match of their Asian tour. United was in control throughout the match, played at Saitama Stadium. The Premier League giant suffered an upset 2-1 loss to the Kashima Antlers on Thursday. United beat Hong Kong’s national team 2-0 and posted a 3-0 win over China’s Beijing Guo’an before arriving in Japan. — AP
