Garbin upsets Jelena

MODENA: Italy’s Tathiana Garbin upset sixth-seeded Jelena Kostanic of Croatia 6-2, 6-3 to reach the Modena International quarter-finals. The 97th-ranked Garbin, seeking her second singles title, will now play Croatia’s Sanda Mamic, who beat China’s Yan Zi 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Top-seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy also advanced to the quarter-finals. — AP
