Rusedski defends title

Newport: Britain’s Greg Rusedski successfully defended his title in the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, beating American Vince Spadea, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 on his seventh match point. Rusedski, also the 1993 Hall of Fame champion, improved to 15-0 on Newport’s grass courts.The final game lasted 22 points. — AP

Greece eye Euro 2012

ATHENS: Euro 2004 champions Greece have plans to spend $138m on six of eight stadia needed for their candidacy to host the 2012 European football championship. The Greek bid will include stadia in Athens, Salonika, Patras, Volos and Iraklio, plus two new facilities in Larissa and Yiannina. The Greek file will be submitted to UEFA on July 21. Azerbaijan, Italy, Romania, Russia and Turkey also intend to submit solo bids, while Croatia/Hungary and Poland/Ukraine are working on joint candidacies. — AFP

Ullrich to continue

GRENOBLE: Jan Ullrich was cleared to continue racing in the Tour de France on Monday when X-rays revealed he suffered no broken bones in a crash the previous day, his team said. T-Mobile team spokesman Luuc Eisenga said the German rider went training after his X-rays came up normal. The 1997 Tour champion fell in a descent in Sunday’s ninth stage and damaged the left side of his rib cage. He continued the stage and finished alongside six-time Tour champion Lance Armstrong. — AP
