UEFA Cup : German rivals advance

London, March 13:

German rivals Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen advanced into the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.

Munich lost 2-1 to visiting Anderlecht but moved past the 1983 winners thanks to last week’s 5-0 first-leg victory, while Leverkusen survived a 3-2 loss at Bundesliga rival Hamburger SV to go through on away goals.

The German pair will be joined in Friday’s draw for the next round by Zenit St Petersburg, who beat Marseille 2-0, PSV Eindhoven, Everton and Getafe. Leverkusen held a 1-0 advantage from the first leg and twice led on Wednesday.

Tottenham and Everton both overcame first-leg deficits to force extra time before losing in penalty shootouts. PSV beat Spurs 6-5. Everton rallied to 2-2 on aggregate against Fiorentina before losing 4-2 on penalties. Juan Angel Albin scored with a chip in the 78th minute to lead Getafe 1-0 over Benfica and through 3-1 on aggregate.
