Valencia beat Barca, Sevilla down Atletico

Miguel Angel Angulo and David Silva each scored to help Valencia beat FC Barcelona 2-1 on Sunday and improve its chances of winning the Spanish league title for the third time in six years. Ronaldinho scored Barcelona’s consolation goal in injury time.

The defending champion’s defeat allowed Sevilla to join it at the top of the standings courtesy of a 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid. Frederic Kanoute scored twice and David Alves added the other goal for Sevilla. Barcelona and Sevilla have 46 points, four more than Valencia and Real Madrid. Atletico stayed fifth with 39.

Sevilla win kept Atletico without a victory at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium since 1993. Kanoute opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Alves doubled the lead six minutes later. Kanoute scored for the 18th time this season when he headed third goal in the 73rd minute. Pablo Ibanez reduced the deficit nine minutes later.

Also, it was: Athletic Bilbao 2, Getafe 0; Osasuna 0, Celta Vigo 1; Espanyol 3, Mallorca 1; Deportivo La Coruna 0, Levante 0; Recreativo Huelva 1, Real Sociedad 0; and Racing Santander 4, Gimnastic Tarragona 1.

FA Cup

LONDON: Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov scored two goals each to help Tottenham advance to the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 4-0 win over Fulham. Keane scored in the seventh and 68th minutes and Berbatov added goals in the 77th and 90th.

Manchester City also advanced, beating League Championship team Preston 3-1. Man City scored twice in the closing minutes at Preston. Bernado Corradi flicked a throw-in to Giorgios Samaras, whose shot deflected in off Preston defender Matthew Hill in the 85th. Stephen Ireland then scored in the 90th. Preston took the lead in the eighth minute on a goal from David Nugent. Michael Ball answered in the 36th minute.
