WORLD CUP: Sweden beat Paraguay 1-0
Berlin, June 16:
Sweden finally scored at the year’s World Cup after having played 179 minutes without a goal. Now, the team needs only a draw in its final group match against England to reach the second round for the second straight time.
Fredrik Ljungberg scored in the 89th minute on Thursday to give Sweden a 1-0 win over Paraguay in Group B. The win followed an opening 0-0 draw against Trinidad and Tobago.
“I think we played much better today. Much better than we did against Trinidad,” Ljungberg said. “Today we scored and have something to celebrate.”
Marcus Allback, a substitute at the 2002 World Cup, set up the winning goal on Thursday, sending the ball across for Ljungberg to head in.
The goal, which came in front of a huge Swedish fans at the Olympic Stadium, was Ljungberg’s 13th in 58 appearances. Sweden plays England, which is coached by a Swede, on Tuesday. That will decide who wins the group, and who will face Germany in the next round.
