Wozniacki wins WTA New Haven title

NEW HAVEN: Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki won her second straight New Haven WTA title Saturday, downing Russian Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-4 in the final of the US Open tuneup.

Later Saturday, second-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco was to take on sixth-seeded American Sam Querrey in the men's final, after the two won rain-delayed semi-final matches in the morning.

Wozniacki, the second seed, claimed her sixth WTA title and third this year. The 19-year-old broke unseeded Vesnina in the first game and went on to win in an hour and 16 minutes.

A break in the weather allowed the women to play for the title on the Connecticut Tennis Center's stadium court.

The women's semi-finals on Friday had been moved indoors, as were the men's semis earlier Saturday as the area felt the effect of the remnants of tropical storm Danny.

Verdasco needed two tiebreakers to overcome seventh-seeded Russian Igor Andreev 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/5).

Sixth-seeded Querrey beat unseeded Argentinian Jose Acasuso 6-3, 6-4.

"I think it was a little slower indoors. Kind of cold in there, so the balls were a little dead," said Querrey, who nevertheless belted 11 aces, including one that knocked the numbers from the hand-cranked scoreboard at the back of the court.

The tournament was scheduled to end on Saturday to give players a chance to rest on Sunday before the start of the US Open - the final Grand Slam of the year - on Monday.

Querrey reached his fifth final of the year, and earned the title in Los Angeles earlier this month. The 21-year-old captured the US Open Series points title, putting him in line for a bonus payout depending on his performance in Flushing Meadows.
