Over 300 people affected by microfinance loans and metre-interest lending - from children to the elderly - have walked 10 days from Hariban, Sarlahi, under the Nagarik Bachau Mahaabhiyan, reaching Chitwan en route to Kathmandu. Many are barefoot with swollen, blistered feet; others shield themselves from monsoon rain with plastic sheets and sacks, sleeping in dharamshalas and temples along the way.
Among them is Jiramati of Bara, whose Rs 1 lakh loan ballooned to Rs 4 lakh. "We've been on the road for 10 days - if the government waives our debt, we could survive," she says. Parmashila Devi, also of Bara, says her Rs 80,000-1 lakh loan was inflated to Rs 3 lakh by the bank.
Their demands: loan waivers, removal from blacklists, and implementation of a 12-point agreement. They say they won't return without a response.
