7 killed, 1 seriously injured in northeast Spain car crash

MADRID: Spanish officials say seven people have died in a crash between two cars near the northern city of Figueres, 25 kilometers (16 miles) south of the border with France.

The collision occurred early Saturday at Pont de Molins on the outskirts of Figurers, the regional government of Catalonia's traffic department said on its Twitter account.

The Interior Ministry said all five occupants of a car with French license plates were killed when it was hit side-on by another car in which two occupants died and one was seriously injured. The ministry said not all the occupants had been identified but Spanish officials were in contact with French and Moroccan consulates.

Carles Puigdemont, president of Catalonia, offered his "condolences and solidarity to the victims."
