‘Uncertainty over Taiwan reforms’

Taipei, June 8:
Taiwan’s approval of a controversial constitutional reform package will add uncertainty but will not lead to a dramatic downturn in recently-improving relations with China, analysts say.
Taiwan’s National Assembly voted yesterday in favour of the package which would allow public referenda on the constitution, a move likely to anger China which sees such polls as a means for the island to push for independence.
Both the independence-leaning ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT), which favours eventual reunification with China, supported the changes and held a majority in the Assembly.
