Dhaka, May 17:

Unidentified assailants gunned down an opposition politician in Bangladesh’s capital today, police and the victim’s party said.

Khorshed Alam, a member of the main opposition Awami League, was walking to a bus stop when he was attacked outside his home in Dhaka, said a police official. Passers-by took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, Awami League spokesman Abdul Jalil said.

Dozens of angry opposition activists smashed several vehicles in the area to protest Alam’s killing, witnesses said. No one claimed responsibility for the attack on Alam, who was the law secretary of the Dhaka City chapter of his party. Alam, 32, was also a lawyer at Dhaka District Court.
