Italian climber’s remains found after 35 years

Islamabad, September 4:

A renowned Italian climber said today that his brother’s remains have been found, 35 years after the brother was lost in an avalanche on a perilous mountain in Pakistan. Reinhold Messner said his brother’s bones, one shoe, hair and pieces of clothing were found July 17 near the base of Nanga Parbat mountain. Messner said his brother Gunther was hit by an avalanche on June 29, 1970. Messner said bad weather hit him and his brother and they lost contact with other expedition members after he decided to descend on the less difficult western side because of his brother’s altitude sickness. The other expedition members decided to descend the difficult, southern side of Nanga Parbat, Messner told a news conference in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad.
