Almaty, January 21:

A senior Kazakh diplomat who was shot in the head at his home in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad died of his wounds today, Kazakhstan’s foreign ministry said. Sapargali Aubakirov, who was deputy head of the Central Asian country’s mission in Pakistan, “died from his wounds at a military hospital in Islamabad,” the Kazakh foreign ministry said in a written statement. Aubakirov had been in a coma since he was found in a pool of blood at his home on Wednesday.

Police in Pakistan said they have no immediate clues about a motive or identity of the attackers and that there were no signs of a break-in. Empty bottles of liquor and four partly-eaten hamburgers were found lying near Aubakirov and a single empty bullet casing, police said. The weapon used in the shooting has not been recovered, police added. Aubakirov’s car was also missing from the driveway of his bungalow. Police have formed special investigation teams to trace the culprits, but no arrests have been made so far.
