Police: Palestinian killed after knife attack at checkpoint

JERUSALEM: Israeli police say two Palestinians ran toward at a West Bank checkpoint with knives in their hands, drawing Israeli fire that killed one and wounded the second.

Spokeswoman Luba Samri says one Israeli officer was lightly hurt in Friday's incident.

Samri says the two Palestinians had driven to the checkpoint on a motorcycle, dismounted and then charged an officer from the paramilitary border police. She says another officer opened fire on the pair.

It was the latest bloodshed in six weeks of violence, including Palestinian attacks on Israelis and clashes between Palestinian stone-throwers and Israeli troops. In all, 11 Israelis and 64 Palestinians have been killed. Thirty-nine of the Palestinians killed were said by Israel to have been involved in attacks or attempted attacks.
