Romania re-appoints highly praised anti-corruption chief
BUCHAREST: Romania's top anti-corruption prosecutor says she will work to increase transparency and recoup losses as she begins a new term in her post.
The Supreme Council of Magistrates on Monday unanimously approved a second three-year term for Laura Codruta Kovesi to continue as head of the anti-corruption agency, reward for her supposed tough approach since she was first appointed in 2013.
In 2015, the agency prosecuted 1,250 cases, including a former prime minister and five former ministers, its best ever performance. It had a conviction rate of 92 percent.
Former Prime Minister Victor Ponta is currently on trial for corruption-related charges connected to the work he did as a lawyer from 2007-2008, charged with receiving money for work he did not perform. He denies wrongdoing.
