Jailed for aborting foetus

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: A Filippino maid working here has been jailed for one year by a Brueni court for illegally aborting her four-month-old foetus. Rosario Dotdot Yaho, 40, found out between September and October last year that she was pregnant but could not afford to pay for an abortion, the court was told on Saturday. She decided to carry out the operation by herself and buried the foetus in the garden of her employer’s house. — AFP

10,000 held for gambling

BEIJING: China has arrested more than 10,000 people in a massive nationwide campaign against gambling, reports said on Sunday. A focal point of the crackdown appears to be free-wheeling Jiangsu province where 7,256 offenders have been punished, Xinhua said. In Fujian province, 2,178 gamblers have been detained. In Jilin province, more than 400 gambling dens disguised as recreation centres for the elderly have been closed down. — AFP
