Pak dam death toll 80:

UTHAL: Rescuers in Pakistan have recovered 80 bodies from floodwaters in a southwestern province where heavy rains caused a large dam to burst, sending torrents of water through towns and villages and sweeping hundreds of people into the Arabian sea, an official said on Saturday. Four hundred are still missing. The 150-metre-long Shakidor Dam burst late Thursday in Baluchistan, about 1,900 km from Islamabad. — AP

DHAKA: At least 22 people have been reported missing after a boat collided with a ferry and capsized in a river in Bangladesh’s southwestern city of Khulna on Saturday, police said. Eleven people managed to swim ashore after the boat turned upside down in the middle of the Rupsha river in Khulna, 200 km from the capital Dhaka. — AFP

HYDERABAD: One person drowned and four others were missing after a boat capsized on Saturday in the Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh. The accident near the Hindu pilgrimage centre of Bhadrachalam in Khammam district, 275 km east of here. Police said 30 people swam to safety. — HNS

One killed, 43 hurt:

BANGKOK: A bus carrying nursing students veered off a road and tumbled down a hillside in western Thailand on Saturday, killing a teacher and injuring 43 students, state media reported. The accident occurred after the bus’ brakes failed in Kanchanaburi province, about 210 km west of the capital, the Thai News Agency reported. — AP

10 killed in factory blast:

BEIJING: Ten workers were killed and six were injured in a powerful explosion at a steel factory in north China’s Shanxi province, state media reported on Saturday. The accident at the Zhaoxin Metallurgy factory in Nanguanzhuang village happened after molten iron leaked from a furnace, the Beijing Youth Daily said. — AFP

Two killed in Thai south:

BANGKOK: Two people including a policeman were killed and 24 other people were injured in the latest attacks by suspected Muslim separatists in Thailand’s south, police said on Saturday. Shop owner Pisan Boonyuen, 29, was shot in the town of Yala on Friday evening. He died in hospital. The militants triggered a bomb hidden near the shop 15 minutes later after police rushed to the scene, killing a police sergeant Sompong Damnarin and injuring 24 onlookers. — AFP

Journo’s death mourned:

KHULNA: Hundreds in Bangladesh joined a mourning procession on Saturday carrying the coffin of a journalist who died from injuries sustained in a bomb attack, police said. Sheikh Belaluddin, correspondent with the daily Sangram newspaper, died on Friday at a hospital in capital Dhaka, six days after he was critically injured. — AFP
