UN aid official: Funds for Libya only left till end of March

CAIRO: A UN official is appealing to Arab League delegates for more funding for Libya, saying the current funds available for the violence-wracked North Africa country will barely last till the end of March.

The UN official for humanitarian issues for Libya, Ali Al-Za'tari, says 2.4 million people in Libya have been affected by the country's deteriorating humanitarian conditions.

Al-Za'tari said in Cairo on Monday that his agency only got $4.4 million, out of $166 million estimated as needed for this year. He says that while they may secure more funding from the United Nations, that would only be enough for the first quarter of 2016.

He added that health services, water and sewage facilities as well as education have all deteriorated in Libya and that food prices have surged.
