33 bodies unidentified

KATHMANDU: As many as 33 bodies, including those of three women who were killed in the April 25 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks, have not been identified yet, said the Ministry of Home Affairs. The death toll from the tremors has reached 9,053. According to the MoHA report, the bodies of 9,023 have already been handed over to their kin after fulfilling legal procedures whereas 33 bodies still remain unidentified.

A police official said the unidentified bodies were recovered from the debris of collapsed structures in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur Rasuwa and Dolakha. The bodies were kept in a mortuary of TU Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj for more than 10 months after taking photographs, fingerprints and DNA samples of each of the bodies. The bodies were buried in a temporary grave on the premises of the hospital later. The remains of the bodies may be exhumed for DNA test and identification process as per the Post-Disaster Dead Body Management Guideline, 2012.
