Samjhana Das's body taken for post-mortem

KATHMANDU: Acid attack victim Samjhana Das's body has been taken to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) for post-mortem.

It has been learnt that her body will be taken to Rautahat today itself to carry out her final rites after completion of the procedure.

Earlier, Samjhana’s parents could not receive her body for post-mortem due to lack of cash-in-hand to clear the hospital bills.

An outstanding balance of NRs 110,000 was required to be paid before the hospital would release her body. However, the hospital later discounted the amount, making it possible for her family to receive her body.

Acid attack victim Samjhana Das dies

KATHMANDU: Samjhana Das from Chandrapur Municipality, Rautahat who was under treatment in Kathmandu for acid-burns, has died.

Das, 18, passed away at 11:00 pm last night.

On September 11, Samjhana and her 15-year-old sister Sushmita Das were thrown acid at while they were asleep.

It was later revealed that their 50-year-old neighbour, in an act of unrequited love, had thrown the acid on Das sisters, his primary target being the elder sister, Samjhana.

Ram Babu Paswan, the criminal in guise of a concerned neighbour, was later detained by the police based on circumstantial evidences.

Meanwhile, it has been learnt that Samjhana's parents are yet to receive her body for post-mortem. Despite having received funds for Samjhana's treatment from several quarters, the unfortunate parents have not been able to claim their daughter's mortal remains in lack of cash to be paid upfront to the hospital administration.

The Kirtipur Hospital where Samjhana was getting treatment is demanding payment in cash to take the procedure forward, denying cheque or any other form of payment.

An outstanding balance of NRs 110,000 is required to be cleared before the hospital releases Samjhana's body.

The valley is celebrating Indrajatra today which implies that the banks will remain closed for the day, making it impossible for Das couple to carry out any transaction.
