Big III jointly appeal to Madhes-centric parties to stop protests, join commencement ceremony tomorrow

KATHMANDU: Chairs of big three parties on Saturday jointly appealed to Madhes-centric political forces to stop their protests and join the constitution commencement ceremony tomorrow.

Organising a press conference at the PM's residence in Baluwatar this afternoon, Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala, CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and UCPN-Maoist Pushpa Kamal Dahal said protests were now unnecessary as the new constitution has enough space for amendment to address their concerns.

"I hope that we will sit for talks with the Madhesi Morcha and other parties outside (the Constituent Assembly process) soon," PM Koirala said at the conference, "I believe it will happen soon."

Likewise, UML Chairman Oli said it was not reasonable on the part of Madhesi parties to stay away from the constitution promulgation process as the new charter has numerous provisions to ensure inclusion of diverse and backward communities.

"It is the moment of historic significance," Oli said, "Let us celebrate together."

Speaking at the meet, UCPN-M Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal said the Madhesi parties did not have any reason now to continue the protests.

Top leaders of three major parties have already pledged to delineate constituencies on the basis of population and demarcate federal provinces on the basis of recommendation by a yet-to-be-formed formed federal commission, according to Dahal.

"The constitution itself has already addressed one of their major concerns about citizenship," he added.

"The issue of demarcation is never finalised at once everywhere," the Maoist leader claimed, "It is not good to object to the entire constitution just because of demarcation."

According to him, it does not suit for any pro-republican, pro-federalism and pro-secularism force to oppose the charter to be promulgated tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the top leaders also issued a joint statement requesting the parties to come to the negotiation table.
