Cyclone Roanu to bring rain for next few days
Kathmandu, May 20
The Meteorological Forecasting Division today said the current weather conditions were likely to remain stable till the next two days or three, as Cyclone Roanu packing winds of 68 miles per hour was heading towards Bangladesh from Andhra Pradesh of India.
The cyclone, which formed over the Bay of Bengal earlier this week, strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm today.
According to a special weather bulletin issued by the MFD, the central and eastern regions of Nepal will experience rainfall, while high mountainous will witness heavy snowfall during the period.
This system is likely to weaken slightly. Roanu is not expected to strengthen much over the next few days as it tracks generally northeast towards the coast of Bangladesh or northwest Myanmar sometime this weekend.
As a result, the primary threat from Roanu will be heavy rainfall.
In general, the rainfall potential of a tropical cyclone is not a function of its intensity, but rather its forward speed, reported various international news agencies.
Many parts of the country received rain today with Biratnagar and Dhankuta stations measuring a whooping 38.4 mm and 38 mm rain. The effect of cyclone also brought 9.8 mm rain to the Kathmandu Valley in the last 24 hours ending at 5.45 pm.
The Valley today recorded a maximum temperature of 27.8 degree Celsius, more than one notch below the average maximum temperature of 28.7 degree Celsius for this month.
Similarly, the minimum temperature was recorded at 16.5 degree Celsius.
