Don't sign anti-national deals, PM told

Kathmandu, February 12

Leaders of various parties represented in the Legislature-Parliament today suggested to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli not to strike deals that could have a negative impact on the country.

MJF-Democratic leader Yogendra Chaudhary said most of the leaders speaking at the meeting suggested to the Prime Minister not to sign any treaty or agreements that could draw controversy or have an adverse impact on the country.

He said the leaders also suggested to PM Oli to take initiatives to improve the relationship with the southern neighbour.

Claiming that Nepal-India relations was affected just because of the Madhes movement, the leaders also suggested to the Prime Minister to resolve issues raised by the Madhes-based parties before leaving for India visit.

PM’s press advisor Pramod Dahal said leaders suggested to the Prime Minister not to sign any anti-national agreements with India.

He said the leaders also urged the PM to remove the existing misunderstandings between the two countries during his visit.

In response, PM Oli told the leaders that he has been publicly saying that he would not sign any anti-national agreement with India during his visit.

“My visit would focus on issues of national interest and I would try my best to lift the relationship of two countries to a new height,” PM Oli told the parties.

Prime Minister Oli had called a meeting with leaders of the parties represented in the Parliament today to discuss agendas for his India visit.

However, NC Acting President Ramchandra Paudel criticised PM Oli for not having any specific agenda for his visit.

Poudel had questioned PM on what basis they should air their views about the visit as there was no written agenda for them to point out negative and positive aspects.

PM Oli is embarking on a six-day long maiden visit to India on February 19.

No leader from the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front attended the meeting called by PM at his official residence in Baluwatar.

Prior to the all-party meeting, the three major parties had also discussed various issues.

During the meeting, the leaders had decided to form a political mechanism to settle the issue of provincial boundaries as demanded by agitating UDMF before PM embarks on his visit to India.
