Civil society champions stress on political resolution of Tarai-Madhesh crisis

KATHMANDU: Some civil society champions on Wednesday urged the government to resolve the Tarai-Madhesh crisis politically and shun the use of force during protests.

They further appealed to the political parties and communities that have been agitating in different parts of the country to resort to dialogue and agreement to get their concerns addressed.

Issuing a statement, they said that it was matter of concern that a situation arose in which all the parties in the Constituent Assembly could not take part in the entire process of Constitution delivery and a significant part of the backward communities that struggled for the change and new statute could not take ownership of the Constitution.

"We would like to clearly and firmly state that this crisis cannot be resolved through excessive use of force and bureaucratically. Doing so may intensify the crisis instead of  bring back the paralysed life in the Tarai-Madhesh region to normalcy," they maintained.

"In such a situation, not only the implementation of new Constitution will be difficult and challenging but the country faces threat of another big conflict also," they warned.

"We appeal to the state and the major parties to resolve this issue immediately and address the concerns of all disgruntled, particularly Tarai-Madhesh through dialogue."

They cautioned the state not to use state power or violent measures and obscure the way out.

The signatories of the statement include former Speaker Daman Nath Dhungana, Prof Dr Lokraj Baral, Prof Dr Om Gurung, Malla K Sundar, Vidyadhar Mallik, CK Lal and Prof Dr Krishna Hachhethu among others.
