G-7 leaders pledge support for Nepal's reconstruction efforts

KATHMANDU: The Group of Seven leaders have assured bilateral and multilateral financial and technical support to Nepal for its post-earthquake rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.

In a declaration issued after their summit meeting at Schloss Elmau in Bavaria Alps of Germany, the G7 leaders also expressed readiness to provide reconstruction assistance as per the priorities set by the Government of Nepal.

“We will continue to provide emergency assistance as needed and are ready to consider requests for bi- and multilateral financial and technical support as well as reconstruction assistance in alignment with the priorities of the Nepalese government,” read the declaration. “We strive to contribute to the restoration of lost and damaged cultural treasures.”

Canada, France, Germany, Italy Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States are members of the G7, an elite club of most advanced economies of the world.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, French President Francois Hollande, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, British Prime Minister David Cameron and US President Barack Obama as well as European Union’s Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and EU’s Council President Donald Tusk had attended the two-day Summit of the Group of Seven that concluded yesterday.
