Major parties discuss impeachment motion against Karki

KATHMANDU: As the House received an impeachment motion against Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) Chief Lok Man Singh Karki, major political parties have expedited internal and inter-party discussions to decide their take on the move.

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN Maoist Centre Chairman, also the Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal held a meeting about the issue today.

Dahal had reached Deuba residence in Budhanilakantha to consult him about next moves.

It has been learned that Dahal had asked the NC leader to support the motion and impeach Karki. Deuba, in response, had told the PM to wait for the party's official decision, the sources claimed.

The largest political force in the Parliament, Nepali Congress, is discussing the issue at its Central Working Committee meeting today. The meeting is said to begin at 2 in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister's party, CPN Maoist Centre, this morning has decided to hold discussions with the NC and other parties about next moves.

It also decided to hold discussions with the Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar about the Parliamentary proceedings.

The main opposition, CPN-UML, is currently holding its Parliamentary Party meeting over the issue.

Earlier on Wednesday, as many as 157 lawmakers from UML and Maoists had filed the impeachment motion, which resulted into the immediate suspension of the controversial chief of Nepal's anti-corruption constitutional body.

Following the suspension, the most senior CIAA Commissioner Deep Basnyat has taken the charge of the CIAA Chief.
