NHRC urges UDMF, govt to exercise restraint

Kathmandu, February 4

The National Human Rights Commission today observed that the Madhesi parties’ act of obstructing activities of other parties in various districts was against the democratic norms and values.

Expressing concerns about the activities of the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front in Dhanusha, among other districts, recently, the constitutional human rights watchdog urged the protesting parties and their cadres to respect democratic norms and values.

Recently, UDMF leaders and cadres in various Tarai districts had obstructed movement of leaders of Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and Unified CPN-Maoist as well as local conventions of the NC.

They had also vandalised houses of some NC lawmakers in Dhanusha and foiled the party’s local conventions.

Meanwhile, the NHRC urged the government to ensure free medical treatment to victims of various police-protester clashes. The statement also called on both the government and the protesters to exercise restraint to avoid violent clashes.
