President calls House to elect PM through majority voting

KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Monday called political parties represented in the Parliament to elect the new Prime Minister on the basis of majority voting at the House in accordance to Article 298(3) of the Constitution.

The call was made after the parties could not elect the Prime Minister through consensus within seven days in accordance to Article 298(2) of the Constitution as called by the President on Monday last week.

The latest call also follows issuance of an order to remove constitutional difficulty that the President issued on last Monday using Article 305 of the Constitution, according to Assistant Spokesperson at the President's Office, Keshav Prasad Ghimire.

It is very likely that CPN Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal would be elected the Prime Minister as the largest party in the Parliament, Nepali Congress, and other fringe parties including the agitating Madhes-centric ones have extended support to him.

The process to elect new government was initiated after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on July 24 after a no-confidence motion was filed against him by Dahal with the support of Nepali Congress.

Prime Minister Oli had put in papers just a couple of hours before he was scheduled to face the no-trust vote.
