Probe panel records Om Hospital staffers’ statements

The five member probe committee formed by the Ministry of Health to investigate the death of a patient after nose surgery at Om Hospital today recorded statements of eight staffers working in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Kamala Bhattarai, 40, a permanent resident of Butwal  died on Wednesday after a surgery for her deviated nasal septum.

The hospital has also provided medical reports and details of the patient to the probe committee. “We are studying the documents and recording statements of staffers involved in the patient’s treatment. Medical reports are also being checked,” informed Dr Bikash Devkota, one of the members of the probe committee.

“We are also inspecting the hospital and equipment used during the surgery. We will also record statements of nursing staff and the management,” he further added.

However, the talks between the hospital administration and the patient’s relatives scheduled for today didn’t take place. “The hospital has decided to wait for the investigation report,” said Bijay Pyakurel, administrative manager at the hospital.

Meanwhile, the hospital resumed its services from today.

Irate relatives of the patient had staged demonstration in the hospital following the patient’s death accusing the hospital of negligence. They have also demanded compensation and educational expenses for the deceased patient’s children.
