Singh appointed TU IoM Dean; Dr KC opposes decision

KATHMANDU: Prof Dr Keshab Prasad Singh has been appointed Dean of Institute of Medicine (IoM) under the Tribhuvan University to be effective from today.

A meeting of the Office of Vice-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University on Saturday took a decision to this effect.

The appointment was based on a recommendation of the Dean Selection Committee. Along with Dr Singh, Prof Dr Jagadhish Prasad Agrawal and Prof Dr Jyoti Sharma had also been recommended for the top post.

However, senior doctor at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Govinda KC, who previously launched strikes at different times demanding reforms in Nepal's medical sector, opposed the appointment.

Meanwhile, Dr KC warned that he would launch his 10th fast-unto-death from today at 3 pm if the appointment was not corrected.

Earlier, Dr KC had given the government a 24-hour ultimatum twice, Wednesday and Saturday, to appoint the IoM Dean on the basis of seniority, instead of political power sharing.

TU VC Dr Tirtha Khaniya, however, claimed that the appointment was based on seniority. Singh still has four months' time to retire from public service.

Singh started working for IoM since 1988 and served as Director of the TU Teaching Hospital four years ago.
