Rawal, Nidhi engage in heated debate at Big 3 meeting

KATHMANDU: Three major parties -- Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and CPN Maoist Centre -- gathered for a tripartite meeting at the Prime Minister's official residence on Tuesday for the first time after the formation of Nepali Congress-Maoist government headed by Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

Prime Minister Dahal had called the meeting to discuss the issues of local restructuring, elections in all three tiers -- local, provincial and federal,  amendment of the Constitution and the finance bill.

The meeting, however, ended without making any conclusion today following a heated debate between Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry for Home Affairs Bimalendra Nidhi, who had recently visited India as the Prime Minister's special envoy, and CPN-UML Vice-Chairman and former Deputy Prime Minister Bhim Rawal.

It has been learned that Prime Minister Dahal had to step in to avoid further altercation between the duo.

Emerging from the meeting, Rawal told the media he said if the two ruling parties (Nepali Congress and CPN Maoist Centre) had made made any agreement on the amendment of Constitution then that has to be told, but discussing the issues related to Constitution in foreign soil first was wrong.

Maoist Spokesperson Pampha Bhusal said the leaders would hold discussion on the issues for some more days to come to a conclusion.
